Efficient use of restraint ropes and knots can keep you, someone else and/or the animal being restrained from getting hurt. Effective controls of restraint ropes and knots can also minimize the dosage of sedatives or other medications.
Injectable sedatives are easy to use, but they have potential problems such as allergic responses, organ failure and food residue. Frequently, the dosage needed can be significantly lowered if the sedation can be accompanied with the use of physical restraint.
In many situations, the procedure required will not permit the animal to remain in a chute. In these instances, restraint ropes and restraint knots can be key to safely handling the animal.
Safety is the first priority to consider with restraint ropes and knots. The “4 S’s” of safety are safety of yourself, safety of the people working around you, safety of the animal and safety of the food produced by the animal.
Prepare for and pay attention to escape routes for you and others. Work slow, deliberately and gently to keep the animal quiet and avoid injury. If the animal receives a medication follow your veterinarian’s prescribed withdrawal time.
