Seasoned Official Judge Callum McKinven, Canton de Hatley, Quebec, placed close to 330 animals in the Ricoh Coliseum when the show took place on Friday, Nov. 9. Bruce Mode of Vankleek Hill, Ontario, assisted McKinven as the Associate Judge.
With a large international audience of 2012 World Holstein Conference participants and more than 50 countries represented in the stands, the crowd watched as Judge McKinven promptly and with concise reasons placed large classes throughout the day.
Two black beauties were selected for Junior and Reserve Junior Champion honours.
Junior Champion title went to first prize Senior calf, MD-Dun- Loafin Lauth Elli-ET owned by Michael Heath, Jefferson, Maryland, and David Dyment, Dundas, Ontario. A Comestar Lauthority daughter, Elli topped a strong class of senior calves – the second largest calf class of the day.
Following in Reserve Junior Champion was the powerful black Winter Yearling of Petitclerc Alexander Amycale, bred and owned by Ferme Jean-Paul Petitclerc, St. Basile, Quebec. Ferme Petitclerc would go on to also capture the Junior Premier Exhibitor and Junior Premier Breeder banners, with a tie for Junior Premier Breeder with Kingsway Holsteins, Hastings, Ontario.
The cow classes began with a bang as a tremendous Milking Yearling class was showcased.
Many winners from the 2012 World Dairy Expo show repeated at this year’s RAWF including the first-place Milking Yearling, Junior Two-Year-Old, Senior Two-Year-Old, Senior Three-Year-Old, Five-Year-Old, Mature Cow, and Longtime Production Class winner.
Intermediate Champion went to first-place Senior Three-Year-Old, Canadian-bred and American owned, Cookview Goldwyn Monique, owned by Jeff Butler and Joe and Amber Price, Chebanse, Illinois. Monique narrowly edged out Robrook Goldwyn Cameron, the first-prize Junior Three-Year Old, owned by Gen-Com Holstein Ltd, Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Conseil, Quebec.
The exceptionally strong cow classes continued from the junior cow class through to the senior classes as the crowd watched the highly anticipated arrival of World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion and Grand Champion RF Goldwyn Hailey in the Mature Cow class. Hailey topped the class and she continued her reign as Judge McKinven named her Grand Champion of the show.
Second-prize Mature cow, Ebyholme Goldwyn Marcia, owned by Brian Eby and Pleasant Nook Holsteins, Ayr, Ontario, was a huge success story for the father-son duo of Brian and Rob Eby as Marcia went on to be named Reserve Grand Champion of the National Black and White Holstein Show.
Marcia was purchased earlier this summer at the Ebyholme Dispersal in August.
A tremendous attribute to the Holstein breed, there were six high-quality Senior Breeder’s Herd with Quality Holsteins of Woodbridge, Ontario, winning the red ribbon. Following in second was the group of three from Ferme Jacobs of Cap Sante, Quebec, who were also awarded the well-deserved Overall Premier Breeder banner.
Gen-Com Holstein Ltd captured the Overall Premier Exhibitor banner having five top two finishes including two class winners.
Semex sire Braedale Goldwyn continued his dominance as Premier Sire of the show, winning this award by over 430 points compared to the second sire, Gen-Mark Stmatic Sanchez. Goldwyn finished the day with seven class winners.
