Over 92 percent of those who responded said the government should legalize horse slaughter saying, “Yes. It will reduce horse neglect and stop horses from inhumane slaughter elsewhere.”

The poll racked up 212 total votes, with 196 of them voting in favor of horse slaughter.

Just less than 8 percent said, “No. Horse slaughter is inhumane and has no part in our modern culture.”
The issue grew more prominent over the summer as permits made with USDA for new horse slaughter plants in New Mexico and Iowa.

At first a federal judge blocked the movement of those permits, but recent actions in federal district court of Nevada amended the temporary restraining order, instructing USDA to suspend the applications.

The U.S. stopped the slaughter or horses in 2006 by cutting the funding for USDA inspections.  Congress restored the funding in 2011, reigniting the debate over whether horses should be slaughtered.
