A wet spring and dry summer has left much of the eastern region suffering from less than ideal weather conditions this growing season. With forage quality and harvest having a tremendous impact on a dairy's production and profitability levels in the coming year, the Center for Dairy Excellence will host a "Mastering the Dairy Business" conference call today on "Managing for a Droughty Corn Harvest."
On Wednesday, Aug. 31, three regional experts on forage management will share considerations dairy farm families must account for as they deal with a heavily stressed corn crop. Dr. Virginia Ishler from the Penn State Dairy Extension Team will discuss how to plan for this year's corn crop, while Dr. David Kirk from Pennfield Feeds will share suggestions for harvesting and storing the crop. Tom Nauman from Hoober Feeds will review strategies for feeding the crop and balancing it with alternative energy sources.
