A farm in North Smithfield has been named Rhode Island’s outstanding dairy farm. The state Department of Environmental Management said that Wright’s Dairy Farm Inc. won the annual Rhode Island award. Ten family members run the fifth-generation farm, along with 50 full- and part-time employees.
State officials said the farm’s 140 cows are milked twice daily in a new, double milking parlor and all have their diets balanced by a nutritionist. The farm has been honored for consistently producing high-quality milk, which is processed and sold on site. The farm also uses its milk to make puddings and custards and other bakery products.
The Rhode Island Green Pastures Committee chose Wright’s for the award. The farm will be honored along with other award-winning farms in New England in September. PD
