New York City's city council has passed a package of bills meant to give a boost to local food consumption and help more city residents build greenhouses. The bills passed Thursday are part of the city's Food Works initiative.
The bills would require the city to report yearly on whether the Education Department is using milk and produce grown and produced nearby. And they would spur city guidelines to increase agencies' purchasing of food grown or produced in New York state.Additionally, the package would reduce the bureaucratic barriers to building rooftop greenhouses.
City officials would also be required to establish guidelines to reduce wasteful packaging. PD
