While no formal groundbreaking ceremony has occurred, the Hilmar Cheese Co.has already started moving earth at the site ofits new Turlock, Calif., milk processing plant.

As Progressive Dairyman reported in February, the facility is expected to cost about $100 million, create at least 40 jobs, receive 50 tankers of milk a day and open in summer 2015.

Water from the plant's milk dryers will be recycled at the plant before being piped to the Turlock Regional Water Quality Control facility, where it will be used to help reduce groundwater usage in drought-stricken California, says the Turlock Journal.

Powdered milk produced at the plant will be trucked to the Port of Oakland, about 90 miles away, before being shipped to customers around the world.

Hilmar currently employs more than 1,200 workers at its Hilmar, Calif., and Dahart, Texas, facilities. PD
