The American Jersey Cattle Association is requesting proposals for research projects addressing significant issues relative to the Jersey breed of cattle and Jersey owners. Successful proposals will receive seed grants from the AJCC Research Foundation.
Proposals will be evaluated on their potential to advance practical knowledge, creativity of approach to the problem, probability of successful completion within the proposed time frame and relevance to the foundation's research priorities.
The foundation prioritizes research in the following fields:
- Nutrition of high-producing Jerseys, particularly practical feeding methods to maximize production of valuable milk components
- Factors affecting management of Jersey calves
- Factors affecting yield and/or quality of products manufactured from Jersey milk
- Factors affecting economic impact of Jerseys: efficiencies, net income, longevity and lifetime profit
- Optimizing the genetic basis for improving animal health and/or enhancing product quality
- Enhancing environmental impact associated with Jerseys
- New technologies for safe and sustainable food production from Jersey cattle
- Feasibility of adding value and increasing consumer acceptance of Jersey-derived products through enhanced product quality and branding
Since 1988, more than $900,000 has been provided in support of research. Funding is in the form of seed money and has averaged $6,000 per project since 2001. The policy of the Foundation is to fund projects only from investment income, and to decline payment of overhead costs. Monies will be available for approved projects after April 1, 2015.
The deadline for submitting proposals by mail or email is Dec. 1, 2014.
