The number of operating dairy farms in Kentucky has dropped to 792, according to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. The Kentucky Milk Safety Branch reported that the counties with the most remaining dairies are Christian County with 91, Adair County with 49, Barren County with 47 and Todd County with 44.

According to Progressive Dairyman's annual dairy statistics poster, Kentucky had 900 licensed dairy herds in 2011, with an average herd size of 84.
