Donald L. Bath, a dairy nutritionist, passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 26. He was 81.
Bath, who was married to his sweetheart, Gloria, was a dairy nutrition extension specialist at the University of California – Davis’ animal science department.
He retired in the mid-1990s and was known for his contributions to the nutritional requirements for lactation in dairy cattle.
In 1996, he was recognized with a College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Award of Distinction.
During his career at UC – Davis, he authored 350 publications on dairy nutrition, including a widely used textbook titled “Dairy Cattle: Principles, Practices, Problems, Profits.”
At the time, Bath was the only extension specialist to have served as president of the American Dairy Science Association.
Anita Oberbauer, professor and chairwoman of the college’s Department of Animal Sciences, said Bath had an “extraordinary national and international reputation for outstanding contributions to dairy science.” PD
