I received my bachelor's and master's degree in animal sciences from the University of Lavras in Brazil. In between receiving my degrees, I did an internship on a dairy farm in Barron, Wisconsin, for three months in order to be exposed to a different dairy system than what is common in Brazil.
My passion and desire to know more about dairy nutrition and management made me come to the U.S. to pursue a Ph.D. in dairy nutrition. After receiving a Ph.D. from the University of Florida, I did two years of post-doc work in dairy management and physiology at the University of Florida.
Background/Experience
Since I was a child, I loved the farm. Although I lived in the city, my grandparents lived on a farm. I frequently visited their farm and friends' farms. When I was accepted into college, I worked hard to acquire more farm experience. I did several internships on dairy farms.
What excites you most about working in your new role?
What excites me the most is the opportunity to be on a dairy farm every day. I am passionate about dairy and nutrition. I am also excited for the opportunity to partner with several dairies in eastern Michigan and help them become more profitable and successful dairies.
What positions have you previously held?
My previous position was a post-doc in dairy management and physiology at the University of Florida. I was responsible for designing and conducting experiments, formulating rations, collecting feed samples and analysis, laboratory analysis and mentoring graduate students.
What are your new responsibilities?
I am responsible for dairy nutrition, ration formulation and consulting at Van Beek Nutrition. We realize that every farm and every group of livestock require different minerals and vitamins to balance their ration. That is why I formulate custom rations that are designed to meet the specific needs of each farm. PD
