A former Iowa dairyman will notice his pocketbook is a little thinner once he pays $75,000 to settle alleged violations of the Clean Water Act.

According to the civil penalty charge, Double V Dairy, located near Rock Valley, allegedly “discharged manure into Rogg Creek and its tributaries between 2010 and 2013,” according to anAssociated Press report. Discharges came from manure stockpiles of used bedding sands in an uncontrolled area.

“Producers should regularly evaluate all aspects of their operations to ensure they are not discharging into nearby rivers and streams,” Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Administrator Karl Brooks said in a news release by the agency March 10. “Even if livestock or poultry is confined indoors, producers still need to manage their outdoor areas.”

The dairy, which sold in late 2013 and now has new owners, had a capacity for around 1,200 cattle, according to the EPA report. Agency officials are working with the new owners to assure compliance with the Clean Water Act. PD
