Dairy producers now have a new approved protocol available for the synchronization of estrus in lactating dairy cows. FDA approval has been granted exclusively for the concurrent use of LUTALYSE (dinoprost tromethamine) Sterile Solution and Eazi-Breed CIDR Cattle Insert in dairy and beef breeding programs.
“LUTALYSE and Eazi-Breed CIDR are the only products approved for concurrent use in an AI synchronization program, and it’s important for veterinarians to be able to recommend on-label reproductive protocols to their clients,” says Dr. Doug Hammon, senior manager with Pfizer Animal Health Dairy Veterinary Operations. “This newly approved label is a continuation of the Pfizer Animal Health commitment to providing veterinarians with comprehensive reproductive management solutions for their clients, while investing in the label claims to allow veterinarians and producers alike to use them with confidence.”
AI synchronization programs can improve the overall reproductive performance of a herd by improving efficiency of heat detection, more timely first service, and a reduction in the variation of calving interval. The on-label protocol for using Eazi-Breed CIDR with LUTALYSE for synchronization in lactating dairy cows is:
1. Administer Eazi-Breed CIDR on Day 0.
2. Remove on Day 7 (for example, if it was inserted on a Monday, remove the next Monday). At the time of removal, administer 5 mL of LUTALYSE intramuscularly.
3. Observe for estrus on Days 9 to 12, and breed on standing heat.
