We previously published our yearly forage statistics poster. But if we drill down the data, we can rank hay production by counties and get really specific with our bragging rights. The USDA collected the 2017 reported numbers; however, only these 30 states were included in the data collection: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Of those counties reported, the top 30 rankings are listed in these tables:

2017 alfalfa hay yield by county

2017 hay yield (excluding alfalfa) by county

2017 alfalfa hay production by county

2017 hay production (excluding alfalfa) by county

If you found your county, there’s something to brag about when you attend a baseball game this fall; however, if you’re in Tropicana Field (home of the Tampa Bay Rays), you might not want to brag too loudly, as that field is ranked the “worst” of the major league ballparks in their “top 30” list, with no retractable roof. If you’re at AT&T Park in San Francisco (which replaced Candlestick Park as home of the Giants), then just know that you’re at the number 1 ranked ballpark in the country, according to Forbes’ ballpark rankings, “First to Worst,” by author Maury Brown.

And now you know.  end mark
