“In spite of its name, many of the forage species discussed and most of the concepts can be applied to forage crops in much of the U.S.,” says author Carl Hoveland. It was written “so that anyone can understand it” and emphasizes practical aspects of forage establishment, production and utilization.
This book is used as a textbook in forage courses at 60 colleges and universities in the U.S. and is widely used by extension personnel. However, the majority of the sales have been to livestock producers for use in grassland principles. Hoveland says the book has been translated into Spanish, Chinese and Polish.
The fifth edition was greatly revised and expanded to 366 pages. Hoveland says significant new material was added to the chapters on soils, stored feed, grazing management and dairy pastures. New features include chapters on forage ecology and minimizing stored feed requirements, grazing management, forage physiology, fescue toxicity and forages for goats, deer, sheep, llamas and ratites.
