The basis of the document which it seeks to adopt — “ISO 4254-13:2012, Agricultural Machinery, Safety, Part 13: Large Rotary Mowers” — was ASABE standard “ASAE S474, Agricultural Rotary Mower Safety,” which will be withdrawn upon approval of the adoption.

ASABE’s adoption of the standard will include a maximum cutting height for use in conducting the foot probe test. Although a deviation from the ISO document, according to ASABE, the inclusion will further align the technical content with another commonly utilized standard, “SAE J232, Industrial Rotary Mowers,” published by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

The adoption of the international standard, with some deviations, moves the national and international standards closer toward harmonization, a goal that facilitates manufacturing, safety advancements and product marketing worldwide, according to ASABE.

Conformance to ASABE standards is voluntary, except where required by state, provincial or other governmental requirements, and the documents are developed by consensus in accordance with procedures approved by the American National Standards Institute.
