“No doubt we had a record number in attendance, especially with the excitement and talk of our breed and the enormous proven potential we offer cattlemen to consistently increase carcass quality,” said Bubba Bain, executive director of the American Akaushi.

This year’s convention featured a variety of industry professionals, each with their own unique message and firsthand Akaushi knowledge, providing those in attendance an in-depth look at both the present and future of the beef industry.

Bain said, “Our convention is unique as we are fully inclusive, continually seeking more input and ideas from all that attend.”

Speakers providing timely information included Colin Woodall, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, vice president of government affairs; Dr. Sara Place, Oklahoma State University; Dr. Joe Massey, DigitalBeef; Janie Bain, American Akaushi Association; Eric Dorr, Kemin Animal Nutrition; Dr. Stephen Smith, Texas A&M University; and Dr. Rick Machen, Texas A&M University.

A highly unique and informative panel featured speakers with various aspects and experience in the beef business. This year’s panel included the moderator, Bill Fielding, CEO, HeartBrand Beef, and panelists Rodd Willis, DOT Foods; Jake Hickto, Burger Monger Restaurants; Joe Doria, Bolner's Meat Market; and Jordan Beeman, president, HeartBrand Beef.

The keynote speaker for 2014 was provided by Lt. Gen. H. M. "Bud" Wyatt III , U.S. Air Force, retired. His message and experience as both a fighter pilot and years at the Pentagon provided an American patriotism theme heartfelt to all in attendance.

The highlight of the annual evening banquet featured the naming of the 2014 Securing the Legacy Award.

Bain said, “This award is presented to an individual, family or ranch that has provided key leadership and marketing efforts for the American Akaushi.”

Last year’s recipient, Austin Brown of Brown Ranches, had the honor of presenting the 2014 Securing the Legacy Award to Sterling Ranches of Tatum, New Mexico, and Sterling Cattle Company of Coahoma, Texas. Four generations of the Sterling family were in attendance to receive this prestigious award.

In addition to the great lineup of speakers, there were plenty of activities, including a golf tournament, trade show, taste of Akaushi dining, the always popular dessert social, a fun auction, country church – and topping off the weekend, many traveled to and toured HeartBrand Beef Ranch and viewed the breed’s foundation herd.  end mark
