Dairy Farmers of America’s Smith to retire at the end of 2022, Rodenbaugh named successor
The board of directors of Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) announced the appointment of Dennis Rodenbaugh to the role of president and chief executive officer, effective at the end of 2022. Rodenbaugh will succeed Richard P. (Rick) Smith, who plans to retire after leading the organization for the past 16 years.
Rodenbaugh, who has a background in dairy farm management and ownership as well as banking and finance, currently serves as executive vice president and president, council operations and ingredients solutions for DFA. He has led numerous business units since joining the organization in 2007, including DFA’s milk marketing, member services and global ingredient divisions. Rodenbaugh has led initiatives to drive member services, customer relationships, operational efficiencies, business development and marketing strategies designed to deliver value to DFA member-owners and meet the needs of our valued customers and consumers. As part of DFA’s senior management team, he has helped lead strategic planning, crisis preparedness, business continuity and other enterprise-wide initiatives.

Castonguay appointed to lead Saputo U.S. dairy division
Saputo appointed Lyne Castonguay as president and chief operating officer of its U.S. dairy division. She joined the company in February 2021 as deputy president and chief operating officer of the U.S. Dairy Division. Castonguay will continue to report to Carl Colizza, Saputo North America president and chief operating officer.
Zero Waste Solutions provider Trident under new ownership
Trident announced that the transition of the company earlier this year to its new entity, Trident TNZ LLC, has been successfully completed.
Under the leadership of the previous founder and owner, Kerry Doyle, the company has gone through a rapid growth cycle and established a leading position as a supplier of resource recovery solutions, in particular for the livestock industry. To meet the growing demand for its advanced zero waste technologies, the company is now preparing to expand its operation.
Doyle continues to stay involved in the day-to-day operation and will advise on strategic decisions as the company’s CEO. The focus of the company’s agricultural division is to continue the launch of its disruptive TNZ manure treatment system that assists in water and nutrient recovery from animal manures and directly improves carbon offsets. The municipal and industrial division focuses mainly on wastewater sludge treatment solutions that help improve clients’ plant efficiency.

DFA farmer named NMPF ‘Communicator of Year,’ AMPI recognized among co-ops
Buffalo, Minnesota, dairy farmer Charles Krause, a family farm-owner of Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), was named the National Milk Producers Federation’s (NMPF) first-ever Farmer Communicator of the Year at the organization’s annual gathering of dairy-cooperative communicators. Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI) earned top overall communications honors among NMPF member co-ops.
Krause milks around 300 cows with his son, Andrew, on the fifth-generation dairy farm. He was recognized for both his promotion of dairy before the broader public as well as his willingness to be involved in crucial public-policy issues before the industry.
AMPI was recognized for its numerous first-place awards in NMPF’s annual communications contest, highlighted by its “Best in Show” recognition for its Dairyman’s Digest magazine, led by Sarah Schmidt and Nickie Sabo in the contest’s publication category.

DCRC recognizes dairies with excellent reproductive performance
The Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council (DCRC) presented Excellence in Dairy Cattle Reproduction Awards to 24 dairy operations during its annual meeting, held Nov. 9-11, in Kansas City, Missouri. These dairies excel at reproductive efficiency, fertility and well-implemented management procedures. Platinum recognition went to Emerald Spring Dairy of Plainview, Minnesota; Kliebenstien Farms of Darlington, Wisconsin; Scholze Dairy of Humbird, Wisconsin; Red Top Jerseys of Chowchilla, California; Wessel Farms LLC of Mineral Point, Wisconsin; and Latham Dairy of Boscobel, Wisconsin.
In addition to the six Platinum winners, there were six Gold, six Silver and six Bronze winners. Ninety-eight nominations came from six countries, 10 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces.

2022 AABP recent graduate conference registration is open
The 5th annual American Association Bovine Practitioners recent graduate conference takes place Feb. 18-19, 2022, in New Orleans, Louisiana. In-person attendance is limited to 300 recent graduates; however, all AABP members can register for virtual conference attendance.
The theme, “Profoundly Impactful,” was developed to offer newer veterinary graduates content that would help inspire new ideas within the attendees, enabling them to positively influence the cattle, clients and the communities they serve. The conference has been submitted to RACE for 15.75 hours of continuing education.
In 2022, there will be three preconference seminars on Feb. 17: Seminar 1, Bull Breeding Soundness Examination; Seminar 2, Thinking Through and Practicing Lameness Treatment Protocols; and Seminar 3, Understanding Finances.
The scientific program Feb. 18-19 will include keynote addresses on the future of dairy, feedlot and cow-calf veterinarians. Other general session topics will include debt management, public speaking, managing emergency situations and fluid therapy in calves. Beef topics include BSEs and semen handling, ET/advanced repro technologies, beef nutrition, chuteside diagnostics, on-farm field trials, biosecurity, anaplasmosis, profit-driven breeding, receiving calf diets, feedlot epidemiology, beef welfare, and ID and disease outbreaks.
Dairy sessions will include leading relationships, dairy consulting, lameness treatments, dairy diagnostics, heifer inventory, beef-on-dairy breeding programs, protocol compliance and training clinical skills, calf housing strategies, uterine torsion, calf nutrition, on-farm trials, mastitis management without antibiotics and selective dry cow therapy. At the dinner on Friday, several attendees will share practice tips. There will also be a virtual and in-person trade show at this conference to allow vendor partners to connect with members.

North Dakota’s Kenton Holle recognized for contributions to dairy promotion
The National Dairy Promotion and Research Board (NDB) honored Kenton Holle as the 2021 recipient of the Richard E. Lyng Award for his contributions and distinguished service to dairy promotion. Holle, a dairy farmer from Mandan, North Dakota, was recognized at the Joint NDB/National Milk Producers Federation/United Dairy Industry Association annual meeting in Las Vegas.
Holle served as chair of the NDB in 2013-14. As chair, he oversaw the evolution of the national program from generic image advertising to helping grow sales and trust in dairy by working with and through the industry.
This commitment to promotion extends through Holle’s community involvement. As a member of his local Lions Club, Holle was instrumental in the creation of Salem Sue, the world’s largest Holstein cow that is located on a hill outside of New Salem, North Dakota, and remains a national tourist attraction.
Today, Holle and his family continue to share dairy’s story and its importance to their community by hosting numerous farm tours, “breakfast on the farm” events and other activities at their Northern Lights Dairy.
As part of the award, the NDB will contribute $2,500 in Holle’s name to North Dakota State University’s College of Human Sciences and Education.

Holstein Association USA announces Virtual Interview Contest winners
Holstein Association USA announced the winners of the 2021 Virtual Interview Contest.
Cash prizes of $250 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place will be awarded in the junior and intermediate divisions. In the senior division, youth will be given cash prizes of $500 for first place, $250 for second place, and $100 for third place. Following are the results from each division.
