A DFC delegation attended December’s COP28 climate summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. DFC Director Korb Whale took part in a panel hosted by the Canadian Federation of Agriculture titled “Industry-Led Commitments to Agricultural Sustainability.”

Dairy customers, brands and retailers have set ambitious greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals, including targets to reduce GHG emissions of their entire supply chain beginning at the farm level, in response to pressure from consumers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), investors and regulators to contribute to rapid action on climate change.

Rangeland scientists at the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center (EOARC) tested whether virtual fencing could prevent cattle from grazing recently burned areas within sagebrush steppe pastures.

Because virtual fencing can help rangeland managers become more adaptive to variable conditions, it could help managers to adapt to the variable impacts of climate change.

“Can we address environmental concerns and meet consumer preferences by breeding more environmentally friendly cows?” So far, the answer is “yes.”
