AgSource has announced the release of the Genetic Selection Guide, a new report designed to assist members of the cooperative using its DHI services in managing decisions related to breeding and herd genetics. Between now and April 1 all members will receive the report as part of their regular DHI report packet.

The Genetic Selection Guide was developed based on member requests for improved tools to manage sire and sex selection of semen and genetic testing decisions. Depending upon herd size, members will receive either their entire herd inventory based on genetic profile, or an abbreviated listing with a link to an online tool that will generate sortable reports from the entire herd. Information about cows is separated from heifers, resulting in two separate report groups. Members choosing to receive the option after the introductory period will have it updated after each USDA sire run, which currently occurs three times annually.

"New technologies such as genomic testing and sexed semen drove development of the Genetic Selection Guide," commented Pat Baier, vice president of DHI Operations. "Genetic progress is accelerating rapidly and traditional approaches to breeding and replacement management are being challenged. All of this combines for the need to create new information management tools to improve decision making in areas that are becoming even more important for herd profitability."
