I have been involved with the research of the RECAL PLUS probiotic now since 2010. We have been performing blood tests, manure analysis, mycotoxin testing, monitoring dry matter intakes and monitoring DHI records. What sparked my interest in the RECAL PLUS was the RECAL Bolus. I couldn't believe how fast the cows would get back to eating and ruminating after a compromise such as a DA, acute mastitis, ketosis, salmonella and at freshening.

The two things I have been hearing from dairymen when they first start using RECAL PLUS is that the cows manure is more consistent, which is a sign of better digestion and less upset stomachs. The other thing I hear is stronger heats. That is a sign of better reproduction to come. We have also seen herds with salmonella & e-coli issues and the RECAL PLUS made it easier to control. We first learned of RECAL PLUS the hard way at World Dairy Expo 2012 when we found ourselves with eight milk cows that didn't handle the trip very well. Luckily, Dr. G.W. Snider happened to be in our barn working with another cow. He instantly recommended RECAL boluses to help get the cows restarted. We were amazed at how quickly the cows started to get back on track. They seemed to immediately start eating better. When we got home, we couldn't wait to check out the website and call the phone number on the bottle of boluses. We quickly made the decision to put the whole herd on RECAL PLUS before our annual trip to the All-American Jersey Show. The great people at RECAL Microbials assured me that if we weren't happy after thirty days that we paid nothing for the product. Thirty days later after a successful All-American trip with cows that had fully rebounded from their World Dairy Expo trip, we were true believers in the RECAL PLUS product.

When we started the RECAL PLUS on our whole herd of 70 cows, we were monitoring our dry matter intakes and milk production. We also did some manure screening before we started the product and also seven days after we started. We could not believe the difference in the manure screenings. The undigested feed that was left in the manure was much smaller in particle size and when dried down and weighed there was actually less undigested feed. With monitoring our dry matter intakes, we saw a 6% decrease in dry matter intake and our milk production and butter fat actually went up. This was due to better digestion and utilization of the feed. This makes for better feed efficiency and more profitability. We are also seeing improved reproduction.

In the spring of 2013 Jamie wanted us to try the new RECAL PLUS SS. He informed us that it was the same as the RECAL PLUS but focused toward even better cow health. We were the first people to try the RECAL PLUS SS. The very first thing we noticed after we started feeding the SS was less udder edema in the fresh cows. Next, we noticed in the pre-fresh post fresh transition the cows performed much better. We have been seeing less ketosis, DA's and milk fevers and the cows just take off and milk. We have also noticed a lot more fresh cows showing early heats at 20-40 DIM without shots and much stronger heats. After being on the RECAL PLUS SS for over a year we are seeing much better hoof health, a lot less abscesses, ulcers and hairy warts. We have never had a significant problem with warts but enough to be problematic, and fortunately now we have no warts at all.

After 30 years in the dairy business I have heard a lot of sales pitches and tried a lot of products that didn't prove profitable. RECAL PLUS did exactly what it said it was supposed to do. As you can tell by our numbers, RECAL PLUS is a great aide in feed efficiency while also improving milk production and profitability. We are averaging 6% or more on our butterfat test consistently, proof positive that RECAL PLUS works!

For the last seven years we have used RECAL products, and we currently use RECAL PLUS SS. The capability and versatility of these products continue to impress us. Frequently cows stop responding to products after being on them for a long time. But even after all this time we continue to get results. This past year at the All-American Jersey show we were the winner of 4 cow classes and named National Champion Jersey with Hirds Colton Dream. However, we don’t stop in the show ring. It is important for these animals to prove themselves in the bulk tank. Our herd averaged 21,429 lbs. milk 1,108 lbs. fat, and 825 lbs. of protein. This ranked us 5th for protein and 8th for fat in the nation with the American Jersey Cattle Association for our herd size. We milk about 1000 cows near Mifflinburg, PA. As many of us know 2018 corn silage wasn’t very good feed. I started reading the advertising from RECAL Microbials and thought “what the heck” and called about it. I talked to Jamie Troxel about the RECAL and he wanted to come to my farm and see with his own eyes what was going on before he would even sell me any of the product because, like he said,” every farm is different”. So, I thought why not, what’s it going to hurt? Plus, I liked the idea that he was willing to come out instead of working over the phone. 

 We were not having any major issues but we were seeing very inconsistent manure and weren’t seeing cows coming into heat. Jamie came to the farm, asked me some questions about how the cows were doing, looked at my ration and silage, and walked the cows.  Right away he picked out the inconsistent manure and noticed that we had a lot of fiber passing through. Jamie then pulled silage samples and checked the dry matters right then with Koster testers he carries in his truck. He told me he was sure that I was dealing with a mycotoxin issue even though I was already feeding a name brand binder, yeast and bentonite. 

Jamie began telling me about the differences in the three RECAL probiotic products and recommended the RECAL PLUS. He told me that I could pull out my toxin binder, yeast and bentonite. He also offered me a thirty-day trial. If I wanted to try the product, he would give me the product for thirty days, tell me what to watch for and after the thirty days if I wasn’t happy with the RECAL I paid absolutely nothing. But if I did like the product then I paid for the product used in the trial and we kept doing business together.  With the way I am set up the only way he would do this trial was if we put some groups on the RECAL and not other groups, so we had a controlled trial. This way I could really see the difference. Since offers like this don’t come around every day I thought why not, plus I liked the way Jamie wanted to prove the product and expressed that much confidence that it would work.

So that’s what we did. I started feeding the RECAL PLUS to two groups of milk cows, the pre fresh cows and fresh cows. I had also been feeding another probiotic to my pre fresh and fresh cows but switched them to the RECAL. I started feeding the probiotic that I had been using to the other two groups to make the trial even better. Jamie also pulled a TMR sample and sent it to Cumberland Valley Analytical for a toxin test and it came back at 3.5 ppm vomitoxin.

There was NO comparison, after about three days the groups that were on the RECAL showed more consistency in the manure and stronger heats.  We saw no change in the groups that were not on RECAL. My Cargill nutritionist even came in and performed manure screenings for the controlled groups and was very impressed with the difference in fiber digestion. I then put the whole herd on RECAL PLUS and pulled out the toxin binder, yeast and bentonite I was feeding. We didn’t see much difference in milk production but our %BF went from about 3.65% to about 4%. We have also started feeding the RECAL Calf Powder to all of our calves and my wife who takes care of the calves has been very happy with it as well. 

Over the summer we have held about 80# milk with 3.75% BF on 50# DMI which is an FCM efficiency of 1.67. Not too bad for dry corn silage combined with a hot summer and a lower than normal percent forage diet than I would like because we had to stretch the corn silage. Reproduction has held pretty good with the summer heat.  I can’t wait to see how the cows perform with 2019 corn silage and feeding the RECAL PLUS. 

I have been very happy with the RECAL probiotics and would highly recommend it to all dairymen. It’s not an expense when you see a return on your investment.

I milk around 140 cows near Salem, Ohio. I have used the RECAL Boluses for several years and have had great success using them to get fresh and sick cows to eat. I have also used the RECAL Plus on show cows with great success.

Over the years I have fed several different probiotics in my TMR and never really felt like they did me much good, especially considering their cost.  In September of 2018 my cows were not performing the way I thought they should. They weren’t showing heats, manure was very inconsistent, and milk production was down.  Since I had great success with the RECAL Boluses and RECAL Plus I decided to check with Jamie Troxel of RECAL Microbials and see if he had any suggestions.  Jamie came to my farm to see my operation first hand so that he could get a feel for what might be going on. Jamie told me about the RECAL probiotics and what he and Dr. G.W. Snider have done in research. He also told me that they have three different probiotics for dairy cows and explained each one. The reason for having three different products is because every farm is different and has different needs. Jamie then recommended that I start with the product called RECAL Pro. The RECAL Pro would cost less than $0.08/cow/day and I could pull my XP Yeast out to offset cost.

In 2016 I saw an advertisement about RECAL Microbials on the Dairy Agenda Today website. I checked out the RECAL Microbials website and saw a testimonial from another dairyman that I knew. I called that dairyman and talked to him about the RECAL. He highly recommended the product and told me to get in touch with Jamie Troxel of RECAL Microbials.  I called Jamie and we discussed RECAL and the next week Jamie came to my farm to talk more about the products. Jamie wanted to look at my ration, cows, forages, and cow manure. He also wanted to hear of any issues I was having with the cows. Jamie wanted to take a look at these things because he said he sees the RECAL working differently on different farms, not all farms are the same. 

After Jamie asked me questions about reproduction, production, and dry matter intake he looked at the ration, the forages, the cows and the manure. He advised me that he was sure I was dealing with a mycotoxin issue. 

The cows weren’t milking like they should, I wasn’t seeing heats like I should, reproduction wasn’t where it should have been and manure was very inconsistent and not digested very well besides having some bloody gut issues.   I was already feeding a well known toxin binder.  Jamie gave me a proposal. He would give me enough RECAL Plus for 30 days and if at the end of that 30 days I didn’t like it, I didn’t have to pay for it. He also told me what to watch for and what to expect the cows to do. He was very confident in the product. He mentioned I could pull yeast and the toxin binder out if I wanted to.  I thought what the heck, I didn’t have anything to lose since the binder didn’t seem to be working, so I took him up on this offer.

The day we started the RECAL Plus Jamie pulled a TMR sample to be sent to Rock River Lab to be tested for mycotoxins and to have a complete nutrional analysis done. The nutrional analysis came back very close to what was on paper, but the vomitoxin level was 3.3 ppm and the T-2 toxin was 134 ppm. Both were high levels. He also performed manure screenings the day we started the product and then came back ten days later and performed the manure screenings again from the same exact cows. 

WOW!!! What a difference. Everything Jamie told me to watch for I saw. Within one week I was sold on the RECAL Plus. Milk went up, DMI went up and then dropped back off a little lower then when we started. I started seeing much stronger heats, much more consistent manure and there was a huge difference in manure screenings. You could see a big difference in rumination as well with the use of my rumination meters.

After we started pregnancy checking cows that had been on the RECAL Plus from the time of insemination, my conception rate started going up, a huge improvement! My vet even noticed that we were getting bigger CL’s which is a sign of healthier cows and reproduction system. The bigger the CL, the better. 

About January 2017 I switched to different corn silage and I was seeing more corn in the manure. I talked to Jamie about that. He said we could try the RECAL Plus SS.  It was different than the RECAL Plus and was a fiber and starch digester. So, we tried it and in the first week the cows went up three pounds of milk and intakes stayed the same. I was watching my rumination meters and the rumination went up 15% the day after I started the RECAL Plus SS and has held. My %BF has also gone up as well.

In 2019 I went back to using the RECAL Plus because I didn’t need the starch digestion.

We milk about 500 cows near New London, WI. I highly recommend every dairyman to feed the RECAL Plus or the RECAL Plus SS.

In June of 2013 we received a flier in the mail about RECAL Plus. Just like all of those other products on the market they all sound great. But we were really interested in this one. So, I called Jamie Troxel of RECAL Microbials and talked to him about the RECAL Plus. He never tried to sell it to me, he simply told me about the RECAL Plus and what they were seeing in research.

Then he told me what he would do to prove the product to me. All we had to do is monitor our DMI, and cow numbers. Then we would take a look at milk weights from the milk hauler and our SCC, MUN, % BF & % Pro from the milk company. Jamie said he would be at our farm several times to perform manure screenings before we started the RECAL and about 7-10 days after we started and then again after that to monitor the information that the cows were telling us. He also said that if we saw no results in 30 days, we paid nothing, if we did see results, we paid for the product and kept doing business together. I had never had an offer like that before. So, I told Jamie that if he was willing to do all of that, he must really have something.

After two weeks of being on the RECAL Plus we saw 3# drop in DMI, a 1# increase in milk production, a $0.59 /cow/day improvement on income over feed cost and we were seeing much better heats and the manure was much more consistent. We were very happy with what we were seeing. So, we decided to keep feeding the Revive Extra. After a few months of being on the product we started seeing our reproduction improve and SCC decrease which made us even happier. 

In January of 2014 Jamie told us about the new RECAL Plus SS that he and Doc Snider had been researching. He told me what they had been seeing in the cows. So, I started using the RECAL Plus SS. We saw everything Jamie told us to watch for. Milk production went up about 2# in the first week, much stronger heats, less fresh cow issues, less udder edema and more cows showing heats at 30-40 DIM.

After being on the RECAL Plus for over a year now and going back and looking at DHI papers we are extremely happy with the results RECAL Plus has helped us achieve.

In the spring of 2013 I met up with Jamie Troxel of RecalMicrobials. I had been hearing very good things from other dairymen about Recal Plus and I knew Dr. G.W. Snider was involved with the research, so I knew there must be something to this product.

Jamie came out to the farm and simply told meabout the Recal Plus and showed me some of the research that he and Doc had been working on together. He never once tried selling me anything. We talked about the Recal Plus and he told me what he does to prove the product. Then he told me he would give me a 30 day supply and if I didn't see any difference I didn't have to pay anything

for it. Normally Jamie likes to monitor dry matter intakes, milk production,% BF,% Pro, MUN's, Eff., feed costs, income, & income over feed cost and

perform manure screenings. Well since we feed grain and hay we could not do that, so we could only do manure screenings.

I was already feeding a probiotic, but from what I had heard from Jamie, other  dairymen and the offer he gave me, I couldn't pass it up. So Jamie & I collected some manure samples, and screened them. I quit feeding the probiotic I was feeding and he got me started feeding the Recal Plus and told me what to watch for and said he would be back in two weeks to  collect manure from the same cows and screen that. I called him in about ten days and said don't waste time coming down, I see the difference already and that I am I going to continue with it. I was seeing a lot less undigested feed in the manure.

I then started on the Recal Plus because Doc and other dairymen had been seeing signs of better blood circulation. Some other things I have really noticed and like about the Recal Plus is how well my cows stay on feed when going to shows, and stress times, they don't go off feed
